Lahaina nights

Maui babes.jpgThere is a plethera of things to do in Lahaina in the evening. The most fun is to just cruise Front Street, window shopping at all the stores and galleries, and watch the people as they go by. You can even find a spot to sit and just spend the night talking with friends. If you’re into more active pursuits, there are a few large hotels up the road in Kapalua or Napili that have places to go dancing. All along Lahaina, Napili and Kapalua you will find local talent playing the guitar or singing at various restaurants or nightspots. Lahaina is usually a buzz in the evening with people going every which way. Of course, most of the people are tourists, but it still is great fun to be a part of it all. Watch the sun set on the ocean ( its awesome!), meet new friends and spend time talking with them.

Unless you’re going someplace special (and I can’t think of anyplace in Lahaina that you’d have to dress up for), basic tourist wear is acceptable at all times. Shorts or slacks, t-shirts or polos, and footwear should get you into any restaurant. Tank tops and slippers or bare feet may cause you some trouble, but not much.

Maui partying Maui style

girls_wading.jpgThe most obvious nightlife realization that one is in Maui can be found with the booze cruises. In Maui (specifically Lahaina and Kaanapali) the cruises $45-$65 and are more catered to cruising than boozing.

The place to begin is Kimo’s. It’s on Front Street in the heart of “downtown.” Best bet is to Go after dinner for its famous Tropical Itch, a potent concoction that comes with a wooden backscratcher poking out of the glass.. It’s rarely busy, most locals easily mix with tourists in the bar. The food is quite good for those who want to mix the Itch with dinner.

Best places for drinks and nightlife in Lahaina/Kaanapali

• Weekends – Sunsets on Kaanapali, followed by Spats, an Italian restaurant at the Kaanapali Hyatt that is converted into a dance spot. Younger locals prefer Paradise Bluz in Lahaina ($15 cover and a collar is required, though they will loan t-shirt stricken patrons an Aloha shirt). Spats is sometimes open until 3 but you must have a stamp to get in past about 1:30.

• Mondays – Hard Rock Cafe. There’s a live reggae band and a lively crowd.

• Tuesdays – Moose McGillycuddy’s. With a $5 cover comes dollar drinks. Get there by 10ish do to there’s a line by 11 but note this is hardly a sophisticated crowd.

• Thursdays –Sushi restaurant called Sansei in Kapalua “everyone likes sushi”(15 minutes north of Kaanapali; take a cab). 15% off sushi from 10-closing. It has people attempting to sing karaoke. It’s steps from the Ritz, so a lot of wedding parties are there, as well as locals.
