Grant to fund loans on Lanai

WAILUKU - The California-based Agape Foundation has made a $1 million grant to support small-business loans and business planning courses for Lanai residents.
Lanai business owners or residents who want to start a business can apply for loans from $500 to $30,000 at an interest rate of 5 percent.
TV stations wouldn’t compete for contracts under new legislation

WAILUKU - Akaku: Maui Community Television and other public-access television stations would not have to compete for their contracts under a bill moving through the state Legislature.
SB707 would allow the state director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to designate the organizations that oversee public, educational and governmental channels on cable television.
TV coverage of meetings falls prey to budget cuts

WAILUKU - Maui County's budget shortfalls have led to another cutback - television coverage of county boards and commissions.
In past years, residents could watch certain meetings of the Maui Planning Commission, Board of Variances and Appeals and other high-profile county committees from the comfort of their living rooms.
