Kula Highway reopened

Traffic in both directions on Kula Highway is being allowed through as deemed safe, as firefighters continue to mop up a brush fire in the area. The road could close again if conditions change, said county Spokeswoman Mahina Martin. A fire first reported at 2:10 p.m. Friday has burned an estimated 10-15 acres in a field next to King Kekaulike High School, according to a county release.

Kula Highway closed for fire

Kula Highway is closed from Aapueo Parkway Drive to Haleakala Highway, due to a brush fire in the area, the county has announced. The Maui News will provide an update when more information is available.

Maui Prep donor tops $1M mark

NAPILI - A major supporter of Maui Preparatory Academy has reached the $1 million mark in his contributions thus far to the private school. Tom Rosenquist, one of Maui Prep's founders, a parent, trustee and past board president, recently donated $125,000, bringing his total giving to the school to $1,075,818.

Winds cause fire, power outages

WAILUKU - Strong winds swayed power lines and brought them close enough to touch off a short-circuit and ignite a grass fire Thursday afternoon in an undeveloped portion of the Maui Lani subdivision near the intersection of Kaahumanu Avenue and Maui Lani Parkway. The events occurred between 3:20 and 3:30 p.m.

Lawmaker calls for emergency session

WAILUKU - West Maui state Rep. Angus McKelvey said he wants the Legislature to go into an emergency special session to deal with the state's $2.7 billion revenue shortfall and Gov. Linda Lingle's plan to furlough state workers beginning July 1.
