Kapalua won’t have LPGA event this year

KAPALUA --- Kapalua Land Co. announced Tuesday that it will not host the LPGA Classic this year, and the women's golf tour has said it plans to pursue legal action. The tournament began last year, and has not had a title sponsor. Being without one left Kapalua unable to continue hosting the event, according to the company's senior vice president of resort operations.

Earthquake under Maui strongest to hit in years

The earthquake that shook Maui on Sunday night was the most powerful to originate under the island in more than five years, but no damage was reported, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The quake's magnitude was 3.5. The last time an earthquake of similar size originated here was April 4, 2008, when a 3.1-magnitude temblor was located 1.8 miles northwest of Pai.

MCC looking to spend and hire in boom

KAHULUI - At a time when jobs are scarce and money is tight, Maui Community College is looking to spend more and hire more instructors to teach a record number of students. Enrollment is up by 56 percent, with 2,837 students set to attend this fall. And registration hasn't closed yet. About this time last year, there were 1,822 students registered.

Lawyers weigh in on next step in juror puzzle

WAILUKU - What the jurors said to the judge in the Lahaina Fashions case is still a mystery, but lawyers for both sides have now advised 2nd Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza what they think he should do next. One side argues that due process requires that the judge reveal what the jurors said, the other side argues that due process requires that he forget about it.

3.4 quake shakes Maui

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported a small earthquake Sunday night that originated on the southeastern flank of Haleakala. Upcountry residents reported feeling the quake. There were no reports of damage. The observatory said the 8:39 p.m. temblor had a magnitude of 3.4 and was located nine miles west of Kipahulu and five miles west-northwest of Kaupo.
