Two UH candidates will appear at MCC

KAHULUI - Maui Community College will host two of the three finalists vying to become the president of the University of Hawaii system this Thursday and on May 12.
Thursday's gathering will take place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Pilina Student Lounge with M.R.C. Greenwood, a longtime leader in the University of California system.

Biodiesel executive to address grads

WAILUKU - Kelly King, vice president of communications and marketing at Pacific Biodiesel Inc., will deliver this year's commencement address for the University of Hawaii Center at Maui Community College.
A total of 61 students will receive their baccalaureate and master's degrees or post-baccalaureate certificates at a ceremony set for 5:30 p.m. May 15 in the Baldwin High School auditorium.
School for Adults to give diplomas

WAILUKU - The Maui Community School for Adults will hold its 42nd commencement exercises at 6 p.m. May 27 in the Baldwin High School Auditorium.
More than 213 students have completed requirements for a high school diploma through the General Educational Development and the Competency Based High School Diploma programs.
The graduation guest speaker will be Mayor Charmaine Tavares.
Fate of vehicle sends drug dealers crushing message

PUUNENE - It took little more than a minute Friday morning to turn a car that had been used in drug dealing near Baldwin High School into a crumpled piece of metal.
The destruction occurred at SOS Metals Island Recycling, where the 1994 Pontiac Firebird was taken after being forfeited to the state, police said.
Annual St. Joseph’s celebration draws crowd

Lou McKee of Kahului dives into a cool treat while enjoying the last day of the annual St. Joseph's Feast on Sunday morning in Makawao. Although McKee is not a member of the congregation, he said he wanted to support the Upcountry church. The event, which started on Friday, is a fundraiser for the church and school.
Seabury Hall student wins state essay contest

A Seabury Hall 6th-grader wrote a letter to the late author of "The Secret Garden," telling the English-American writer how her story of an orphaned girl, her sickly cousin and a healing plot of ground taught her how to be a better perso.
Lifeguards return to Makena

MAKENA - County lifeguards took their posts at Makena State Park on Friday, after a 15-year stretch when the often-treacherous beach was left unguarded.
Towers are located at both ends of the park popularly known as Big Beach. Lifeguards will be on duty from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week, and will be linked to the county's 911 emergency response system.
CEO Lo: It’s new day for hospital

WAILUKU - Maui Memorial Medical Center had a "monster session" at the Legislature, wrapping up Friday with much-sought-after bills that will give it more autonomy than ever as well as tens of millions of dollars for operations and new facilities, said Wesley Lo, chief executive officer of the hospital.
The Maui County legislative delegation did yeoman's work, Lo gushed Saturday.
