Employee shook hand, stole from pocket - judge

WAILUKU - Even after he was given a chance to repay $60,000 he had stolen, a man continued to steal from his employer "in about every way you could think of," 2nd Circuit Judge Richard Bissen said. On Wednesday, he sentenced Vivas Kane to a 10-year prison term for thefts totaling about $100,000 from BJ's Chicago Pizzeria from November 2004 to October 2007.

Honoring a fellow officer

Maui Police Department recruits honor the memory of officer John Lilio as his funeral procession passes Hale Maka'i police headquarters on Mahalani Street in Wailuku on Friday. The four-year veteran of the department was only 36 when he died April 8 after an 18-month fight with cancer. Lilio was buried in Maui Memorial Park's Garden of Meditation.

Appeals court reverses Honolua Bay ruling

WAILUKU - An appeals court has reversed a Lahaina man's conviction for obstructing access to public property at Honolua Bay in 2006. In its April 21 order, the state Intermediate Court of Appeals said the issue was whether a pathway used by the public to reach the bay was a public right of way. Counties will continue to get TAT funds

State lawmakers have killed an attempt to balance the state budget by taking the counties' share of hotel room tax money, a move that would have brought the state $100 million annually. May Day is Lei Day

Maui High School senior Alicia Mataele performs the Tongan dance "Teu Lele Mai" as Selaima Pullen jumps in to join her Friday morning during May Day festivities at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort and Spa. Mataele's mother and Pullen are both hotel employees. Marriott staff welcomed the community and guests by providing entertainment, an impressive lei-making contest, local-style food and crafts.
