Trust names Lanai City, ‘a jewel,’ as endangered

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Lanai City one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, saying that Castle & Cooke, which owns much of the town, wants to "make way for large-scale development." Castle & Cooke President Harry Saunders says his company also wants to preserve the charm of Lanai City, although it perfers a different approach.

Maui County new car sales down by half

New car sales are down by half this year in Maui County, according to the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association. New registrations are down dramatically across the state for the first quarter, but nowhere as deep as on Maui, where 789 new cars were registered, compared with 1,482 the year before. HADA figures are compiled by Auto Outlook Inc. in Malvern, Pa.

Visitor numbers fall 25.8% in March

Maui County visitor traffic in March plunged 25.8 percent from the same month a year ago, to 168,546, according to the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Statewide visitor arrivals also dropped, but not as steeply, going down by 16.6 percent to 555,902. The average length of stay was stable at about nine days, but tourists spent nearly 10 percent less.
