Molokai panel to discuss wind farm

KAUNAKAKAI - Gov. Linda Lingle's Molokai Community Advisory Council is set to discuss this month a project to establish a wind farm on Molokai. The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. April 14 at the Kulana O'iwi's Department of Hawaiian Home Lands / Office of Hawaiian Affairs conference room in Kaunakakai.

5 arrested in assault on an off-duty officer

WAILUKU - An off-duty Maui police officer suffered multiple injuries when he was beaten Saturday night near the Waihee Ball Park, police said. Police arrested two men and three juveniles - two boys and a girl - in connection with the assault and were continuing to interview the suspects at the Maui Police Department Sunday evening. The investigation stems from a fight reported around 11 p.m.

Group aims to educate about baby tooth decay

WAILUKU - Advice on how to avoid baby bottle tooth decay is being distributed in free dental packets to families of newborn babies in a new Maui Community College program provided at Maui Memorial Medical Center. The packets also contain a toothbrush for a child with a handle for an adult, informational brochures and a sample teeth-cleaning wipe for infants.

Data: State hotel rates have worst Feb. in 18 years

HONOLULU - Maui occupancy rates fell nearly 10 percentage points when comparing the 85.1 percent level of hotel occupancy in February 2008 with the 75.8 percent rate recorded for the same month last year.

Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary - Maui

The Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary on Maui, was once a royal fish pond. Known in Hawaiian history as the twin ponds of Kapuoho in honor of King Kapiiohookalani. King Kapiiohookalani started building these ponds over 200 years ago. The Kanaha Pond is also an important breeding location for three endangered Hawaiian birds.
