Na Wai Eha users urged to apply for state permits

WAILUKU - The state Commission on Water Resource Management is asking users of the four streams that make up Na Wai Eha in Central Maui to apply for a permit by April 30 if they want to continue diverting surface water.

KIHEI BEAUTIFICATION DAY SEEKING HELPERS KIHEI - Volunteers are welcome to join beautification projects Saturday morning on the north side of the Kihei Small Boat Ramp and at Kamaole Point. The project starts at 8:30 a.m., with volunteers assembling near the boat ramp off of South Kihei Road to spread mulch on a coastal heritage trail, said Bob Richardson of the Kihei Community Association.

47 laid off at Zippy’s in Kahului

KAHULUI - Kahului Zippy's has laid off 47 workers less than a year after it opened its first Maui restaurant in August, officials have confirmed. On Wednesday, a spokeswoman said the layoffs were the result of "adjustments in business levels." The ongoing recession and downturn in tourism have caused numerous businesses to lay off employees or reduce their working hours.

Store workers scared, hurt in confrontation

WAILUKU - Kihei Safeway employees testified they were scared and shaking after confrontations with three Kihei men turned violent early Monday as the employees tried to stop suspected shoplifters from leaving the store. "My adrenalin was rushing, but at the same time I was really shaking," said Jonathan Laloulu, who works at night as a stocker at the store in Piilani Village Shopping Cente.
