Coast Guard releases reports on fatal catamaran accidents

HONOLULU -- The U.S. Coast Guard released reports Thursday on two fatal touring catamaran accidents that occurred in Hawaiian waters less than four months apart in December 2006 and March 2007.
The latter accident, on March 25, 2007, claimed the life of a 48-year-old Illinois man who was struck by a downed mast aboard the 55-foot Kiele V about two miles off Kahana. Hal W.
Trolling in Kahoolawe waters permitted for 4 days

KAHOOLAWE - Waters around Kahoolawe will be open for trolling for permitted vessels Saturday and Sunday and also on May 16 and 17.
According to Hawaii law, all vessels must register annually with the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission before entering the reserve to troll during designated open water trolling dates.

Women Helping Women losing funds at critical time

WAILUKU - Women Helping Women's annual tea fundraiser on Sunday is coming at a critical time, with demands for help from the domestic violence agency increasing while funding sources dry up under the strain of the troubled economy.
"We've seen, definitely, budget cuts from some of our funding sources. People are giving less," said Stacey Moniz, executive director.

Trust names Lanai City, ‘a jewel,’ as endangered

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Lanai City one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, saying that Castle & Cooke, which owns much of the town, wants to "make way for large-scale development."
Castle & Cooke President Harry Saunders says his company also wants to preserve the charm of Lanai City, although it perfers a different approach.
Maui County new car sales down by half

New car sales are down by half this year in Maui County, according to the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association.
New registrations are down dramatically across the state for the first quarter, but nowhere as deep as on Maui, where 789 new cars were registered, compared with 1,482 the year before.
HADA figures are compiled by Auto Outlook Inc. in Malvern, Pa.
