State Supreme Court rules against Superferry

HONOLULU (AP) - The state Supreme Court has ruled that the state law allowing the Hawaii Superferry to operate while an environmental study is being conducted is unconstitutional.
The court sent the case back to Circuit Court, leaving the fate of the Superferry's service in question.
The Legislature passed the law during a special session in November 2007.
Water demand down, supply up last week

WAILUKU - Overall water demand fell by more than 2 million gallons per day last week, compared with the week before. Upcountry reservoirs were full or filling up, and water flowing in the Wailoa Ditch topped 90 percent of its capacity on six out of seven days.
‘Sisterhood’ takes men out of equation

PAIA - Maui could be getting more gender-specific programs for substance abuse and mental health treatment.
The merger of three of Maui's key mental health agencies last year has led to better coordination on patient care, including streamlining treatment programs specifically for women, said Aloha House Executive Director Jud Cunningham.
W. Maui Hospital developer ‘ecstatic’

WAILUKU - State approval has been granted for the proposed West Maui Hospital and Medical Center.
State Health Planning and Development Agency Administrator Ronald Terry faxed his favorable decision to developer Brian Hoyle and Newport Hospital Corp. in California on Friday afternoon.
"We're ecstatic. We're overjoyed," Hoyle said Sunday morning.

DNA analysis of almost every Hawaiian monk seal that lived during the past 25 years reveals that the animal has the lowest genetic diversity of any mammal ever studied - less even than the cheetah, the northern elephant seal and the northern hairy-nosed wombat.
