Maui County unemployment rate more than doubles in one year

HONOLULU -- Maui County's unemployment rate soared to 7.3 percent in January, more than double the January 2008 rate of 3.1 percent. The December 2008 rate was 6.6 percent According to numbers released today by the Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, the state's overall rate was 6.1 percent, the highest in more than 25 years.

KIHEI - A pilot project to improve reading by 1st-graders at Kamalii Elementary School is seeking volunteer tutors. Principal Mary Auvil said the program is a chance for the school to partner with the community in building better readers. "We can't do it ourselves," Auvil said. Volunteer Gail Mitchell agreed. "I think it's paramount that the community get involved," she said.

Man arrested after tipping over cones

LAHAINA - A Lahaina-bound driver, who apparently didn't realize a police sergeant was nearby, was arrested Monday after he was seen leaning out of a truck to knock down cones along a Honoapiilani Highway restriping project, police said. Jimmie Sims, 18, of Kihei, was driving a 1988 Nissan pickup truck into Lahaina just south of Puamana Park at 2:45 p.m.
