County Council OKs outside attorney in Nishiki complaint

WAILUKU - The Maui County Council on Friday authorized the Board of Ethics to hire an outside attorney for advice on a complaint against Council Member Wayne Nishiki. The board proposes to ask an attorney from the Hawaii County corporation counsel to help on the case. Total cost would be only $1,000 to cover the attorney's expenses.

Man gets prison for crashing into house, threatening pedestrian

WAILUKU - A 39-year-old Lahaina man was sentenced to five years in prison Friday for an incident last year where he crashed a truck into a home under construction and held a box cutter to the throat of a pedestrian who was trying to help him after the crash.

Ag festival goes deeper than the plants, veggies being celebrated

WAIKAPU - Maui's most famous vegetable, the onion, will be at the second annual Maui County Agricultural Festival on Saturday, along with the people who grow it, but not in huge numbers. It's a little early for Maui onions. That's part of the story behind the festival, which is not simply a celebration, holiday and feast at Maui Tropical Plantation.

From Pasture to Plate

KULA -- It's midmorning, and Haleakala Ranch's small-livestock manager, Michael Abreu, is shifting his unusual herd - Maui lamb - from the field to paddock using a high-pitched whistle and Ben, his whip-smart kelpie border collie. Along with the customary cow moos or goat bleats, the ranch founded in 1888 has gotten into the baa business over the past year or so.
