Hawaii wins ceded lands dispute at Supreme Court

WASHINGTON (AP) -The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a congressional resolution apologizing for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893 did not strip the state of its authority to sell or transfer about 1.2 million acres of land. The court's unanimous decision overturns a ruling by the Hawaii Supreme Court that blocked the sale of land conveyed to Hawaii when it became the 50th state.

Nine Maui police officers suspended last year

Maui Police Department officers were disciplined with suspensions ranging from one to 10 days in nine cases investigated last year, police reported. The actions were taken for offenses including harassing a supervisor, violating terms of a no-contact order and unauthorized use of a controlled substance.

KAHULUI - Maui music audiences can expect some fun April 28 when top-selling singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow performs in a 7 p.m. outdoor concert at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Tickets go on sale to MACC annual donors at 10 a.m. Friday. They go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m.

Small local companies benefit from ‘overflow’

KIHEI - Small local rental car companies, such as Kihei Rent A Car, are turning a profit as their chain competitors are reducing the size of their fleets to cope with the downturn in tourism and lack of demand.

Car agencies cut fleets with tourists on decline

KAHULUI - With fewer tourists vacationing on Maui, car rental companies have decreased their fleets - some by double-digit percentages, leaving renters scrambling to find available vehicles. "We probably won't come (to Maui) until June, if we can get a car over there," said John Farmer, of Portland, Ore., who visits Maui five times a year.

Crime Stoppers

This week, the Maui Police Department and Maui Crime Stoppers seek the public's help in locating Anthony Risko, also known as Anthony Risco. Risko is wanted for theft in the second degree. His bail was set at $5,000. Risko is described as a Caucasian male, 46 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing about 165 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes.

Kahoolawe nets nine whales per minute HONOLULU - An average of nine whales were counted every 15 minutes off the coast of Kahoolawe on Saturday as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Ocean Count.
