Maui’s Hamoa Beach

Purple Heart plan persists despite funds

MAKAWAO - A group of combat veterans has fallen short on funds for a memorial honoring Purple Heart soldiers in Maui County. The fundraising effort by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Maui County Chapter No. 779, began last May and has garnered only about $3,500 of the $6,000 it needs to have the memorial made. The group is still soliciting donations.

Park improvements set to start

WAILUKU - Two major projects at county park facilities are slated to begin Tuesday. First, Kahului Community Center will close through early July for the first phase of a renovation project. It features a kitchen renovation, construction of a unisex bathroom with access for the disabled, related improvements and post-construction maintenance work.

Judge overturns jury’s guilty verdicts

WAILUKU - Overturning a jury's guilty verdicts, 2nd Circuit Judge Joel August acquitted a felon Wednesday of charges that he illegally possessed an assault rifle and ammunition found in his vehicle. "There was no evidence at the trial that the defendant had even touched or attempted to touch or handle the weapon at any time," August said. "Mere proximity is not enough.
