Motion in Kaho’ohalahala case to be heard

WAILUKU - A motion for summary judgment in a lawsuit that seeks to prevent Sol Kaho'ohalahala from continuing to serve on the Maui County Council is expected to be heard March 13 by 2nd Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza.

‘Lack of ambition’ may have saved Kihei building developer

KIHEI - Developer Doug McLeod is hoping his "lack of ambition" and decision to build on a small scale will help him get through the current rough patch in commercial real estate. County, developers ordered to pay $18,694

WAILUKU - Maui County and developers have been ordered to pay nearly $19,000 in costs to attorneys for residents who sued to enforce current building height limits in Maui Lani subdivisions.

Phillips to close out MPD career

WAILUKU - Maui County Police Chief Tom Phillips announced Friday afternoon that he will end his more than 30-year career with the Maui Police Department and retire effective June 1. Phillips, 55, has spent almost 11 years as Maui County's top cop. He was initially hired in 1976. "I felt like it was time. I'm just ready to go," Phillips said on Friday. "I feel really good about the department.

Woman injured when whale strikes vessel

LAHAINA - Paramedics took a woman to Maui Memorial Medical Center on Friday afternoon with what appeared to be minor injuries after the fin of a humpback whale struck the research vessel she was on in West Maui waters. Maui Police Department Lahaina Division Capt. Charles Hirata said the vessel Hokulani reported the pectoral fin strike about 1:25 p.m.

Research boat hit by whale

LAHAINA -- Paramedics took a woman to Maui Memorial Medical Center Friday afternoon after her research vessel was struck by the fin of a humpback whale off the coast of West Maui. Maui Police Department Lahaina Division Capt. Charles Hirata said the vessel Hokulani reported the pectoral fin strike at 1:36 p.m.

Kahului residents can expect low water pressure Saturday

KAHULUI -- No water pressure, and perhaps no water at all, can be expected by Kahului residents on Saturday when a crew from the Department of Water Supply works to repair a broken valve at a water tank off Waiale Road. The work is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The valve was broken during work to relocate an 18-inch water transmission line on Thursday night.

WAILUKU -- Maui Police Chief Tom Phillips announced this afternoon that he will retire effective June 1. Phillips has served more than 30 years with the department and almost 11 years as chief of police.

Water outage closes Pomaikai Elementary

KAHULUI -- Pomaikai Elementary School shut down this morning because of a water outage. The problem stemmed from scheduled work by contractors to relocate an 18-inch water transmission line near Waiale Road in Wailuku. The work was announced early this week and scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Thursday and end at 5 a.m. today.
