Kaanapali hotel fall victim identified

KAANAPALI -- A woman who died Thursday afternoon in a fall from the 10th-floor balcony of a Kaanapali hotel was identified today as Laurie Brunner-Chapple, 52, of California.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, which was reported at 4:16 p.m. at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa when hotel management called police, said Lt. Chad Viela of the Lahaina Criminal Investigation Division.
Bill would give park rangers power to ticket rule-breakers

WAILUKU - Maui County's park security officers would get the authority to write tickets for illegal camping, unpermitted beach businesses and other rule-breaking under a bill that received initial approval Thursday by the Maui County Council.
Park rangers now only have the power to observe activity in parks and warn people who violate park rules.
Man convicted of assault of jogger and kidnapping

WAILUKU - A man is facing a 20-year prison term after he was found guilty of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a jogger who was accosted on Hana Highway in Kuau.
James Carvalho-Apo, 20, of Kahului, was taken into custody after 2nd Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza announced the verdicts Thursday afternoon in the nonjury trial.
Approval sought to sell Paia luxury home

WAILUKU - Mayor Charmaine Tavares is asking for approval to remove and sell the luxury home built on the Montana Beach property in Paia.
A letter from Finance Director Kalbert Young proposing a resolution to authorize the sale was received by the Maui County Council on Thursday. It will need to be reviewed and approved by the council before Tavares could proceed.
Owner tight-lipped on plans for Renaissance Wailea Beach

WAILEA - The Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort hotel has not been torn down as planned, and its owner, Starwood Capital Group, is not saying whether plans to redevelop it as a Baccarat luxury condominium project are dead.
Hawaiians speak out against plans for Villages of Leiali’i

LAHAINA - Saying the state should not develop housing on ceded lands, Native Hawaiians rejected a proposal Wednesday night to build more than 3,200 homes at the Villages of Leiali'i in Lahaina.
"This is our land," said Keahi Kapali, a 33-year-old who identified himself as the West Maui representative for the Reinstated Hawaiian Government.
