Twelve buyers at Honua Kai sue for refund

Since three would-be buyers at Honua Kai sued to cancel their contracts in December, another nine unhappy buyers have filed complaints in 2nd Circuit Court seeking refunds. Richard Rost, who is representing all 12 purchasers, said this week that Intrawest had not responded to letters sent on behalf of his clients asking that their contracts be canceled.

Mayor hopes electric hybrid start of a ‘green work force’

KAHULUI - A special test vehicle used by the county as part of a national study of hybrid electric cars was unveiled at Maui High School on Friday morning. The U.S. Department of Energy paid to upgrade the county's 2007 Toyota Prius with an extra battery and plug-in apparatus, so the vehicle can be recharged at a standard electrical outlet and get better gas mileage.

Jake Shimabukuro on Maui

Musician Jake Shimabukuro entertains Seabury Hall music students in the school's gym Friday afternoon. He then invites them to play along on their own ukulele. The students enjoy his performance. The appearance was one of a number of stops for Shimabukuro, who visited with keiki and adults alike on Maui. He will appear at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center's Castle Theater at 7:30 p.m. today.

State panel reclassifies Kihei land

MAKENA - Over the objections of Maui County, the state Land Use Commission on Friday approved a district change that could lead to A&B Properties' housing development proposed for north Kihei. The Land Use Commission voted 8-1 Thursday during a two-day meeting at the Maui Prince Hotel to approve a district boundary amendment from agricultural to urban for the $151 million project.

Maui native wins award at Sundance

Inauguration Day will always hold a special meaning for Maui native Destin Daniel Cretton. Running on a few hours of sleep Tuesday, Cretton, 31, woke up to watch a broadcast of Barack Obama becoming the first Hawaii-born president of the United States. That same day, after running around Park City, Utah, on an "Obama high," Cretton's short film was awarded Sundance Film Festival's U.S.
