Man, 64, dies in Makena traffic accident

MAKENA -- A 64-year-old man died this morning when the he lost control of a van that collided into a pickup truck on Makena Alanui Drive, police said. The van driver was identified as Patrick Gibson. His 1988 Volkswagen van was heading in the Kihei direction at 6:19 a.m. when it hit a Ford Ranger truck that was heading in the opposite direction, police said.

Upcountry, W. Maui water systems improvements complete

WAILUKU - The Department of Water Supply has completed $15.2 million in water system improvements for its Upcountry and West Maui water systems, the department announced. The improvements are expected to reduce maintenance time and costs and increase operating efficiency. The largest single project is a $9.

Kaupo portion of road closes due to rainfall

KAUPO - Maui County officials shut down a portion of Piilani Highway on Sunday morning after heavy rains and runoff lifted pavement off portions of the road and sent mud and debris into the Kalepa Bridge and Pahihi gorge. County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said driving conditions in the area were hazardous, and the closed portion of the road was between Mileposts 38 and 39.

‘Freedom of information 2008′ event is scheduled

MAKAWAO - Artists across the nation and one here on Maui will perform on Wednesday in the "freedom of information 2008," a performance, protest and ritual in response to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Maui performance will be held from midnight Tuesday to midnight Wednesday, New Year's Eve at the Makawao Union Church community hall. It will end with the ringing in of the new year.

Roadwork on Haleakala Highway continues

KAHULUI - Work on installation of a concrete overlay pavement on the Pukalani-bound lanes of Haleakala Highway will continue this week, state highways officials have announced. The state Department of Transportation said the project will shut down one lane at a time and will involve a five-mile stretch of the uphill-bound lanes of the highway.
