Governor receives nominees to fill vacant 9th House District seat

WAILUKU -- The names of a Wailuku attorney, the chairman of the Maui County Democratic Party and a supervisor in the Maui Police Department's 911 Central Dispatch Office were forwarded today to Gov. Linda Lingle as candidates to fill the vacant 9th District House seat left by the death of longtime state Rep. Bob Nakasone.
Police recover a safe stolen from business

WAILUKU - Two men were arrested when police recovered a safe stolen in a break-in at a Wailuku business last week.
Wailuku patrol officers noticed the men standing near a white sedan that was parked in the Round Table area in Waihee at 11:40 p.m. Friday, said Lt. John Jakubczak of the Criminal Investigation Division.
Proposal to put off pay raises gets cool reception

WAILUKU - Gov. Linda Lingle's proposal for the state's top elected leaders to put off scheduled pay raises received a cool response from three of four Maui County lawmakers reached for comment Monday.
A fourth legislator, South Maui state Rep. Joe Bertram III, made it abundantly clear he doesn't like the idea.
March 2 trial set in shooting death

WAILUKU - A March 2 trial was scheduled for a 45-year-old Kahului man who pleaded not guilty Monday to murder and firearm charges in connection with the shooting death last week of his 19-year-old son.
Joe D. Antonio is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Maui Community Correctional Center, pending a bail hearing Wednesday.
Hungry for Housing

WAIKAPU - Housing developer Jesse Spencer has completed the last of 411 homes at Waikapu Gardens, and now he is setting his sights on a much bigger fast-track affordable housing project at Maalaea Village, formerly known as Maalaea Mauka.
Spencer had 140 people working to build the Waikapu Gardens homes, but he said he has had to lay off 120 of them.
