Justices face a number of issues

WAILUKU - Two lawsuits filed last week challenging Sol Kaho'ohalahala's election and his right to be seated in the Lanai residency seat on the County Council could face procedural questions. A petition to the Hawaii Supreme Court contesting the election results was originally filed Nov. 24, the day of the deadline, by 21 Lanai residents.

Lawsuits continue dispute over residency

WAILUKU - Defeated County Council candidate John Ornellas is contesting Sol Kaho'ohalahala's election to the council's Lanai residency seat. Ornellas filed a complaint with the Hawaii Supreme Court last week asking for the election to be invalidated. He argued Kaho'ohalahala was not a Lanai resident or a registered voter, and that his claim of residency was fraudulent.

Couple’s exit from Thailand an ordeal

Wailea residents Duffy and Sharon Deardeuff were to wrap up a 16-day cruise trip to Asia with a two-day stay in Bangkok, Thailand, seeing the country's glittering temples, its floating markets and other sights. Then, before they were scheduled to leave Wednesday, their tour guide called with some bad news: Protesters had closed the airport.

Radio deejay Boy Kana`e dies

KAHULUI - Da Hawaiian Supaman, deejay Boy Kana'e, died Monday afternoon at Maui Memorial Medical Center after being found unconscious at his Kahului home by his daughter, co-workers said. KPOA Program Director Alaka'i Paleka said Kana'e had a show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on radio KPOA, and his daughter, Malanai Sunia, had gone to his Huali Way home to check on her dad.

Absence of algae may be due to diversion of waste

KAHULUI - Diversion of pineapple cannery wastewater from an injection well to cane fields is likely the reason that Kahului Harbor no longer experiences algae blooms, the County Council was told Monday.
