KAHULUI - It was a mixed shopping bag for Black Friday on Maui as some merchants reported that post-Thanksgiving sales were busier than they expected and others said Friday's totals did not match up to previous years.
Man held in choking of wife

WAILUKU - A 37-year-old Kihei man was being held on $5,000 bail at the Wailuku Police Station on Friday for allegedly choking his wife after he saw her talking to someone else at a bar on Thursday night, police said.
Tad J. Ramos was charged with abuse by strangulation.

Insects being released to attack gall wasps

A tiny insect that attacks the Erythrina gall wasp that has devastated Hawaii's wiliwili trees is being released in the islands by the state Department of Agriculture in an effort to prevent further decimation of the native wiliwili.
The new insect, Eurytoma erythinae, is a small black wasp, slightly larger than the gall wasp.
Lahaina bypass to move forward

HONOLULU - Work on Phase 1A of the Lahaina bypass highway is expected to begin in mid-December following a realignment to avoid an archaeological site, state Transportation Director Brennon Morioka said in a statement released Friday.
Lunas’ season ends

WAILUKU - The Lahainaluna High School football team's dream of returning to the state Division II final looked completely lost for most of Saturday night's game against Radford at War Memorial Stadium.
The Lunas made a late run to hope, but fell in the end 33-27 to the Rams in front of about 4,000 fans.
State to start construction on Lahaina bypass

HONOLULU -- State Transportation Director Brennon Morioka said Friday in a written statement the department will initiate work on Phase 1A of the Lahaina bypass highway in mid-December following a realignment to avoid an archaeological site.
Legislative workshop added to Maui schedule

HONOLULU - Reporting high interest in the workshops, the Public Access Room of the state Legislative Reference Bureau has added a sixth workshop on Maui to provide information on getting access to the Legislature.
According to an announcement from the Public Access Room, the workshops will assist the public in preparing and submitting testimony for the legislative session, which opens on Jan.

WAILUKU - It's all "real preliminary," but Maui Memorial Medical Center is squeezed for space for facilities and parking on its 15-acre site and is casting around for what its options might be.
Maui Economic Opportunity occupies a 1.2-acre chunk, one of five parcels owned by Maui County along Mahalani Street that's part of the Cameron Center complex.
