County names new executive on aging

WAILUKU - A counselor and specialist in mental health of the elderly has been named Maui County's new executive on aging, Human Concerns Director Lori Tsuhako has announced. Deborah Arendale, a geriatric mental health specialist with the University of Hawaii, will take the county position Monday. She succeeds John Tomoso.

Government offices to close for holiday

WAILUKU - County, state and federal offices, public libraries and schools will be closed Tuesday in observance of Veterans Day. The Waiehu Golf Course and county pools will be open for regular hours, except the Sakamoto Pool, which is closed for repairs. Trash collection will follow a normal schedule, except on Lanai, where residents with Tuesday pickups will receive service on Wednesday.

Ferry fund is going dry with cost to repair docking barge

A request for $414,284 in repairs to the docking barge for the Hawaii Superferry to land at Kahului Harbor will exhaust the state harbors appropriation for ferry-related improvements, Deputy Transportation Director Mike Formby said Friday.

Third-quarter losses reported

KAHULUI - Maui Land & Pineapple Co. reported a net loss of $8.7 million for the third quarter of this year, a loss that was more than 50 times greater than the $155,000 net loss in the same quarter of 2007. For the first nine months of this year, the company reported a net loss of $8.8 million, compared to net income of $12 million for the same period in 2007.

Cole leaving ML&P posts

KAHULUI - With Maui Land & Pineapple Co. losing millions of dollars, David Cole has resigned effective Jan. 1 as chairman, president and chief executive officer - leadership positions that made him the second-highest-paid executive among Hawaii companies.
