Broken cable cuts off TV to West Maui

Customers in West Maui, Molokai and Lanai were without cable television service for much of the day Friday, as crews worked to repair an aerial cable that was severed mid-morning Friday. With one lane closed as crews worked on repairs at Mile Marker 7 near the pali, traffic was slowed on Honoapiilani Highway.

Hana dialysis plan takes first step on long road

WAILUKU - A communal home dialysis service in Hana would be the first of its kind in the country, but a number of hurdles remain before patients in the remote East Maui community can avoid a grueling four- to five-hour round trip to Wailuku for treatments three times a week.

Economist: County job data show no growth

KAHULUI - In his annual economic updates, professor Leroy Laney always includes two graphs about employment - the total employment number and the unemployment number. "Sometimes they give conflicting signals," he said Friday. But usually, "the job count is the better indicator." The numbers are in synch now: The net number of jobs created in Maui County this year is estimated to be zero.

Maui is on a business down cycle

KAHULUI - The good news is, in Maui County economic contractions are shorter than expansions. The bad news is, we're in a contraction now. The 34th annual Maui County Business Outlook Forum at the Maui Beach Hotel was easily the most downbeat in decades if not ever. The Elleair Ballroom was filled with people paying to eat shrimp and hear bad news.
