Report: Technology industries are growing in Hawaii

In contributing $3 billion in 2007 to the state's economy, private technology companies represent only a small percentage of overall earnings in Hawaii's business sector. But a new analysis of Hawaii's position in technology industries released last week said employment in the sector should continue to grow at 2.1 percent annually, and will require 1,650 trained workers statewide every year.

Cable TV procurement rule protested on Maui

WAILUKU - Supporters of Akaku: Maui Community Television expressed fear that the state is seeking to control the community's ability to speak through public access television. Akaku leaders said the state is breaking its own laws.

Opponent is out of touch - Ornellas

KULA - County Council candidate Sol Kaho'ohalahala said Lanai should look for economic alternatives to tourism, but candidate John Ornellas said the statement showed his opponent was out of touch. "He hasn't been on Lanai for a while, so he doesn't have a good grasp of what's going on," Ornellas said.

Long horns on Baldwin - no bull

Emiliano Achaval of Makawao rode up Baldwin Avenue on his Texas longhorn steer, Mufasa, 10, Wednesday afternoon: practicing for next year's Fourth of July parade. Achaval recently received Mufasa, who will make his home at Makawao's Rocking K Arena. He will be the mascot for the Kahuku Ranch on the Big Island. Mufasa weighs 1,700 pounds, and his horns are 91-1/2 inches long from tip to tip.
