Hawaiian adding new planes to its fleet

HONOLULU - At 1:32 p.m. Thursday, Hawaiian Airlines dispatched its new Boeing 717-200 on its first flight to Maui. All 118 seats were filled.
It is the first of four new 717s that will be added to Hawaiian's interisland fleet, with more coming one a month from November through January.
Federal judge: Retrial, release in Maui murder

A federal judge this week ordered the release or retrial of a man convicted of a 1995 murder on Maui, saying he improperly wasn't allowed to call three witnesses during his trial more than a decade ago.
In the 1997 trial in 2nd Circuit Court, Taryn Christian was convicted of second-degree murder of Vilmar Cabaccang.
Crowds fulfill fair theme of community

WAILUKU - Blaring horns, marching bands and floats brought the excitement of the 86th Maui County Fair to Kaahumanu Avenue on Thursday.
Crowds of spectators were out for the parade, fulfilling the fair theme "Where the Community Comes Together.
She loves a parade

With the community getting together and jamming the side of Kaahumanu Avenue, Sandy Hew of Kahului displays her excitement as she waits for the start of the Maui County Fair Parade on Thursday afternoon near Maui Community College.
Hew said she comes out to enjoy the festivities every year and likes to support the parade participants from around the community.
Cargo volume down at harbor

KAHULUI - The volume of cargo coming through Kahului Harbor is down sharply, although the total of interisland and overseas port calls has not changed much.
Jeff Hull at Matson Navigation Co. in San Francisco said Thursday that the volume of auto traffic no longer justifies using one of the company's freighters.
