Theft payback tab is more than $30,000

WAILUKU - A Lahaina woman said she hoped to continue working at two jobs so she could repay more than $30,000, as she was sentenced Wednesday for stealing the money while employed at a Kaanapali business. As part of her sentence, Tina Draper, 49, was sentenced to a 30-day jail term and placed on five years' probation.

Winds enough to stave off vog from Big Island

KAHULUI - An early-season North Pacific cold front cut the normal trade winds as predicted over the weekend but allowed enough of a northeasterly breeze to keep the vog from the Kilauea eruption away from Maui County.

Cable TV rules set for public hearing

KAHULUI - The state Cable Television Division is proceeding with public hearings on a proposal to establish rules for awarding contracts to manage public, educational and governmental access on cable television to comply with state procurement laws.

Illegal TVR case settled

WAILUKU - The County of Maui has settled its largest - and first ever - dispute over an illegal transient vacation rental. Stephanie Rager, of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., paid $35,000 in July to put an end to a bitter fight with the county over Rager's former short-term rental in a residential neighborhood in Kihei where TVRs are not allowed without a conditional use permit.
